Hey history lovers!! I am back and I am reflecting my US History class this week. This week my class discussed slave production and supporting topics with evidence (primary source). At the beginning of the week we partnered up and worked on finding evidence to certain topics. I learned how to look for good primary sources and using Google/Wikipedia to find anything! After this, we talked about cotton, the progression of cotton production and slave labor. During this time different machines surfaced, the cotton-spin (1760s) turned the fibers into thread, the cotton weaver (1780s) helped weave the cotton into fabric and the cotton gin (1790s) was created to separate the fibers from the seeds. I learned that the overseers (people that watch over slaves) could make their slaves work 5 times faster in the span of 50 years. This really made me think about all the ways the overseer would have to make his slaves work faster (work longer hours, make slaves become ambidextrous, and lots of punishment)! Seeing how much cotton a slave picked a day was really eye opening to me and showed me how lucky I am. I mean there are people out there working in factories, making our iPhones and I'm justing sitting here complaining about my eyebrows. Quinn said that they now have to put nets over railings in factories so people don't jump off and kill themselves, like WHAT?! From this week, I have learned that I got it much better than other people, how to find the right evidence for topics and that slave owners back in the day were HUNGRY for faster cotton production.
Thanks so much for reading!
xoxo Ellie
